My name is Wil Szczech. My brother Frank and I have been in the fitness business for over 20 years. In 1990 we opened the Pine Grove Fitness Center located in a tennis club in Camillus, NY. Our first version of the club was small; located on one unused tennis court of a 10 court facility. It had a few stairmasters, a circuit of nautilus equipment, free weights, and a group exercise studio. Pretty basic, but we had a loyal customer base who loved the facility and told their friends. Over a short time the fitness club quickly expanded again and again. We adding an indoor track, basketball court, a spinning studio, piles more fitness equipment, and grew to a point where it now encompassed the entire tennis club. Before we knew it, we had the largest and most successful fitness center in the western suburbs of Syracuse. But what does success really mean? For my brother and I, it has never been purely about financial gain. Yes, of course we want to provide for our families, but we really measure our success in the transformation of our clients. Quite simply our goal is to have a positive effect on the people who patronize us - provide results and thereby change their lives.
As the club has grown and changed over the years, so has the fitness industry. Watching it all, I began to notice specific trends. A certain percentage of new members could workout on their own and get the results that they wanted. Another percentage would find a workout they liked, workout consistently, but not get the results they wanted. The rest would workout for a while, not get connected to a workout, not get results, and fall off the bandwagon. These last two groups have always troubled me. Why couldn't we get better results for these people? How could we motivate them to continue their fitness journey? I mean, we have state of the art cardio equipment and the latest circuit training machines....what were we missing? Should we invest in new machines, a different elliptical, more TV's?
The answer that I discovered was right in front of me all the time. The problem wasn't that I didn't have enough machines, it was that all fitness machines didn't produce very good results and are really boring to use! I mean, let's face it, unless you are part of the minority who really love running on treadmills - treadmills suck! The average person gets on one, starts running in a circle, realizes that it's really hard, looks at their watch after what seems like eternity, realizes only 10 minutes have passes, and says "uuggh how much longer do I have to endure this for?! - This sucks!" I mean, we put TV's in front of them to help you forget you are on a treadmill! And even when you can endure the boredom of running on the the thing for 45 minutes, it still doesn't provide the fat loss results that you would expect. In fact recent studies have shown that steady state aerobic conditioning like running is highly ineffective for weight loss! It just doesn't work!
Fast forward to today. I have spent the last 2 1/2 years learning from the best trainers and nutritionists in the industry. I have criss crossed the country multiple times attending seminars, workshops, and certifications to learn how to provide the best results for my clients. I took everything that I have learned from these fitness guru's, combined it with my 20+ years of fitness experience, and created something completely unique and special.
